What’s a Vape Tank?
A vape tank is an atomiser that contains a coil & holds up to 2ml of E-Liquid. The tank is connected to the battery (or mod) via a threaded (510 connection) or a magnetic connection and electrical current is fed to the coil. The coil is composed of resistance wire which heats up – atomising the E-Liquid into a vapour which the user then inhales. Vape tanks come in a myriad different styles, sizes & shapes, providing an MTL (Mouth to Lung), RDL (Restricted Direct to Lung) or DTL (Direct to Lung) inhale style.
What do MTL, RDL and DTL actually mean?
Each of these terms refers to how much airflow one can draw through the mouthpiece, or how “loose” or “tight” it feels to inhale. MTL is the tightest draw and is more akin to smoking a cigarette, which is why most beginner vape kits adopt this style. RDL is halfway between MTL and the more airy DTL, offering a middle-ground. Finally, DTL offers unrestricted inhalation which typically provides greater vapour production and sometimes improved flavour. If you don’t know which style suits you, look out for airflow control as a feature on vape tanks and kits as this will give you some freedom to customise your vaping experience.
Vape Tank Compatibility
Most vape tanks feature a 510 connection – a threaded piece which allows them to screw onto “mods” (a term which is used to describe the actual device holding the battery). Any vape tank with a 510 connection will fit on any 510 compatible mod, but you will also have to consider the power requirements of the tank and your power your mod is able to supply. Do not try to pair a 30W mod with a tank that requires more than this. It may also be prudent to mention that some tanks are very large, and some mods are very small – so consider this before you purchase one or the other.
The other style of connection is magnetic, but this is almost always for specific combinations and there is little in room for compatibility with other devices. Magnetic connections are most commonly seen on pod kits like the Xros Pro.
Vape Tank Leaking
Many vape tanks are prone to leaking and for various reasons. Sometimes it’s a faulty device or user error, but sometimes it’s just because of poor design. If you want to avoid leaking where possible, opt for a top-airflow vape tank like the Voopoo UForce L.
What is a Sub Ohm Vape Tank?
In a nutshell, Sub Ohm tanks provide high-power for maximum vapour and flavour production. They must be paired with an appropriate vape mod capable of supplying the correct power. The term “sub ohm” denotes a coil which is sub (less than) 1 ohm in resistance. Lower resistance means more power is required to heat the coil for the E-Liquid to be atomised into vapour. Typically, such coils are under 1 ohm because they’re large and made of a thicker resistance wire (or many wires together).
What is an RTA?
RTA stands for Rebuildable Tank Atomiser – a vape tank that requires the user to place their own coil(s) and cotton wick in the build deck. These are more complex tanks and you need to understand the basic principles behind how a vape coil works, how cotton absorbs E-Liquid and how airflow will effect the overall vape quality.
It is however the most rewarding style of atomiser available and with some effort you may just find your perfect setup. What’s more is the value for money they offer. Handmade coils, whether you buy them ready made or wrap them yourself, are the cheapest long term solution to vaping there is. Getting to grips with an RTA isn’t all that difficult after some trial and error, and you’ll save yourself a fortune in the process. We highly recommend the Blaze Solo RTA by Thunderhead Creations.
General Troubleshooting Questions
Why does my vape taste burnt?
This is because the coil is either worn out from too much use, or it is struggling to absorb the E-liquid you’ve put in the tank. If it’s a new coil, make sure you’re using compatible E-Liquid. Some tanks require thinner 50/50 vape juice whilst some can handle 70/30 vape juice. If you’ve been vaping with the same coil for some time, it’s probably time to replace it.
Why is my tank leaking so much?
Vape tanks can leak because of poor sealing between components, liquid which is too thin, or because the coil is damaged and cannot absorb the E-Liquid and hold onto it. Check that your tank is screwed or fitted together properly. Try a new coil to rule out a faulty unit.If these fixes don’t work, it could be the tank’s design itself. Find reviews online for your tank – you may find a pattern!
Why is my tank getting so hot?
In our honest opinion this is usually because of poor design. The manufacturer hasn’t accounted for the heat dispersion through the material of the tank, or they’ve placed too much emphasis on how it looks rather than how it works.
The best solution (annoyingly) is to vape less or reduce the power setting. Some tanks get around this with insulators or elongated mouthpieces.
Which coils will fit in my vape tank?
Check the packaging for details as to which coils are compatible.
Rebuildable Tank Atomisers can accept a wide array of handmade coils but you’re best bet is to find a Youtube video if you’re stuck.
Are there any tanks with a capacity greater than 2ml?
UK law means all vape tanks must hold no more than 2ml of E-Liquid. Luckily there are many tanks out there that offer a spare bubble glass – which is often an expansion of the stock version. Using this allows for greater capacity and less frequent refills.
